By the end of the 18th century it had been established that the Garden Warbler was breeding over most of England and Wales and into Scotland south of the Highlands. It was absent from the Isle of Man but bred in several small pockets of suitable habitat over much of Ireland. The situation remained similar for 50 or 60 years and then breeding started to be recorded in the Isle of Man and further north in Scotland. By the time of the second Breeding Atlas there were further gains in Scotland but birds were lost from almost 30 10-km squares in Devon and Cornwall. Fluctuations in the CBC index include a major gradual loss in the 1970s and a steady recovery up to about 1990. These changes may have been driven by problems on the wintering grounds. Prospects seem good provided the winter weather in Africa holds out.
