This small duck is a long distance migrant wintering in Africa. A hundred years ago it was virtually confined to East Anglia and Kent but the population increased and expanded — extremely sporadic in Ireland, now and again in Wales (mainly Anglesey) and recently regular with up to 20 pairs in Scotland. It is now fairly regular in many areas of England with a good number living on reserve areas. The best RBBP totals in recent years were maxima of 160 and 163 pairs in 1992 and 1993. Prospects seem rather good.
