Definite breeding was first proved in Scotland in 1908 and up to 80 pairs were breeding by the late 1970s and again in 1990 but there was a recent low of 37 in 1988 and there has been a worrying downward trend recently. Some breed away from core area but breeding productivity often very low. Probably safe as a Scottish breeding bird.
