Treecreepers spread northwards in Scotland during the 19th century and reached North-west Sutherland a few years later. They bred on the Western Isles for a few years in the 1960s and 1970s and again in the 1990s; however they are not known to have bred on Orkney or Shetland. In Ireland they spread in Western Mayo and Connemara fairly recently but there was a considerable loss between the two Breeding Atlases from all over Ireland — there were also losses in Britain. As a very small resident bird they are very vulnerable to cold winter weather. The CBC has fluctuated about a fairly steady mean following the recovery from the 1962/63 winter but, recently, may have increased slightly. Still vulnerable to winter cold but otherwise set fair.
